Radiation fears have prevented authorities from collecting as many as 1,000 bodies of victims of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami from within the 20-kilometer-radius evacuation zone around the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant, police sources said Thursday.

Re: Tsunami & Earthquake in Japan
I was glued to computer just to receive a response like this. I thank you from the bottom of my heart (water is rolling down from my eyes). What I got from you, so much, ...May God bless all people in trouble in Japan.

Re: Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan
The huge and devastationloss all over the Japan was a matter of great pain and sadness for all of us particularly those who have a great love for humanity and a few like me who is very close emotionally to Japanese people. May god give you the strength and courage to stand all these odds we all are with Japanese people and pray to almighty for an early end of irony of great Japanese people. We are always with all of you. Once again I pray for early normalcy because the Japanese people are always devoted and loyal to their country.

Re: We are all praying
We all are praying for all people of JAPAN. We are with you in the hour of crisis.

Re: hello
It is a great tragedy. I looked through the pictures. Overwhelming.
And the greetings from all over the world touch me so!
I will for sure send the desperate cries from Japan to the meeting. But I will also tell about the strong spirit and solidarity in Japan that I am sure will help you now and forever.
Many of the Japanese blogs tell "we are strong, we will never give up".
In the darkest of moments, there is and must be hope for the future.

Fukushima Victims

I just turned off TV while trying to write this article.
The news programs continue to  convey devastating images and shocking reports around the clock everyday.

Imagine if you were here in Japan
Imagine if you heard a report on a man who had lost everything he had cherished...his wife, two children, a house and all family belongings.  Their memoirs.  All that he adored and loved is gone.  He cannot even go near his house searching for them because an evacuation order is issued to the residents due to high level of radiation.

Almost no rescue nor search operation has been conducted since the disaster in the area within 20km radius from Fukushima Daiichi Plant.  And our hopes to carry out the rescue operation in the area is getting thinner and thinner as the latest situation unfolds.

It's so cruel..... Imagine the devastation this man is going through.  Imagine if you were in Japan where the unthinkable is becoming a reality.

We are all wondering why.  Why did this have to happen?

I remember seeing on TV the image of a community hall where these most affected Fukushima victims were taken in on DAY 1 before the evacuation order was issued.  The building looked so ironically gorgeous and upscale as a shelter....  The communites to host nuke plants get substantial subsidies in Japan.  But it's so sad to think that no money can restore the lost lives, lost land, and simple and ordinary life they used to have.

video: US photographer tells of his experience in Japan

Watch the video footage by a professional US photographer, U.S.A Today

"I think people were just in days...wondering about their towns that they grew up in, they lived in.. It's almost like they were ghost... They don't seem to have taken on any actions or they have a lot of causes.... They are just wondering about trying to fathom what has occured.  I don't think any images can truly convey the acts of destruction these coastal town villagers suffered."

Tsunami Disaster in Numbers

254 vessels
JCG (Japan Coast Guard) identified 254 unmanned vessels and boats adrift off the tsunami-stricken coastline. Some boats were found at a point as far as 340 km off shore.

3 km
There’s a phenomenal shortage of gas in disaster-affected areas where infrastructure is restored to an extent. There are long lines of cars waiting to get fuel at gas stations  Some people drive up to the station in the night and leave the car unattended until morning.  This is causing a terrible congestion as the line of cars reaches as long as 3 km.  Another serious problem for vehicles for rescue/aid operation and public services.

3 TIMES,  3000 TONS
Totally, 3 devastating tsunami waves attacked at a few hours interval.  Many of those who survived the first Tsunami wave lost their lives as they went back to check on their family and houses when the second and the most horrible third wave hit.

In addition, each tsunami wave was accompanied by devastating undertow (backward current), which was in most cases much stronger than the original wave itself. In Onagawa town, Miyagi, several reinforced concrete buildings collapsed completely from the base structure.  All of these collapsed buildings lie toward the sea, which indicates that they were pushed by backward current of an estimated force of 3000 tons.

20 METERS
Tsunami that hit Onagawa town, Miyagi allegedly reached 20 meters high above ground level. That is equivalent to 9 story building.

27,000
Total number of death and unaccounted for exceeded 27,000.  The number of evacuees in shelters accounts for 250,000.

40 YEARS
Fukushima Nuke Plant was commissioned exactly 40 years ago on March 26, 1971.  No one, no officials who celebrated the occasion could have imagined that the plant they gave birth to would turn into an uncontrollable monster and cause such a horrible disaster to Japan.

Daunting Aftermath Photos of Tsunami in Japan

2 weeks passed.   Watching news report everyday on tsunami-devastated area is shocking and saddening enough.

Yet, I found what is aired, "what is considered OK to be aired,"  is not everything to depict the reality.

More than 200 daunting photos intoduced in New York Times....

I'm at a loss for words.

The Man Who Doesn't Sleep

Do you recognize this man?
He made frequent appearances on TV last week to give the up-to-date report on the imminent situation to the people of Japan, press, and to the world.

As his face literally represented Japan in this time of crisis, some viewers in overseas may have thought this is our Prime Minister, but he is not.

 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mr Edano, 46, the chief cabinet secretary and the right-hand man of Naoto Kan, the prime minister, has appeared every few hours on television in a blue emergency jumpsuit to update the nation.
But many are worried the man will collapse from a lack of rest since Friday's twin disasters. The hashtag #edano—nero is trending on the popular micro-blogging site - "nero" means "go to sleep" in Japanese.

There are some who compares the spokesman to Jack Bauer, the lead character on the hit television show "24", a tireless counter-terrorism agent who works around the clock to prevent major attacks in the United States.
(cited from Telegraph, England ) http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/japan/8383430/Japan-earthquake-Yukio-Edano-the-Jack-Bauer-of-the-crisis.html
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is believed that Mr Edano worked intently for more than 100 hours continuously for the first 4 days without sleeping at all.

His words were also very logical and always to the point, which was rather new when compared to typical old politicians in Japan.  Many of Japanese including myself now admires his tireless effort and professional commitment!

In Twitter, even a new word was coined after Mr. Edano.  The verb, “eda-ru.”  means to work effortlessly and tirelessly around the clock (& without getting any assistance from the boss…)

The worst of times sometimes brings out the best in people

More self reliancy.
The unprecedented scale of earthquake and tsunami struck Japan during the administration of Prime Minister Kan which had already lost public confidence.  The upside is that Japanese citizens have come to think and act without relying on the government, which makes me wonder if something good can come out of something bad.
(Cited from Real Voices of Japan Earthquake  http://hearthevoicefromjapan.blogspot.com/)

One of Japan’s largest crime group YAKUZA, has also opened its offices across the country to the public and been sending truckloads of supplies, but very quietly and without any fanfare.  They went into action, shipping food, water, and blankets to the devastated areas.

The worst of times sometimes brings out the best in people.

twitter by Japan Self Defense Force (JGSDF)

I heard that the Japanese Self-Defense Forces is the only armed group in the world that saved more people than it killed.  We are very proud of that.  Hang in there, Jieitai (Self-Defense Forces)!

Self-Defense Forces members working to their physical and mental limits

My mom’s friend’s son is a member of Self-Defense Forces (SDF) and is now working hard trying to rescue people on the front line.  They do their work stepping over dead bodies crying and thinking “this man might have been saved if we had arrived earlier.”  I truly admire these members of SDF who are working to their limits physically, and mentally.

As movies and books quote, "Tough guys don't talk much."
They still remain  in the background, but we can now hear and see some of their brave missions in JGSDF twitter.

Status of the Nuclear Reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi Power Plant, March 21

There are a total of 6 reactors at Fukushima Daiichi Power Plant.  None of the six reactors at the plant have operated since the earthquake. But explosions have damaged four of the buildings, and fuel in the reactors and spent fuel stored in the buildings is in danger of melting and releasing radioactive materials.

Reactor 1:
<Problem> Outer building is damaged and it is presumed that there was a partial meltdown.
<Latest Condition> Pressure within the reactor containment vessel appears to be stable.

Reactor 2:
<Problem> Partial meltdown is presumed to have occurred.
<Latest Condition > Power is restored to the building.

Reactor 3:
<Problem> The reactor containment vessel may have been damaged and the spent fuel pool may have become uncovered.
<Latest Condition> Fire engines begin spraying water on the building again to cool down the reactor and the spent fuel pool.

Reactor 4:
<Problem> Spent fuel rods in a water pool may have become exposed to air, emitting radioactive gases.
<Latest Condition> Fire engines spray water on the building for more than an hour.

Reactor 5 & 6
<Problem> The reactor is shut down and building is not damaged, but there was a concern over spent fuels in the building.
<Latest Condition> Reactor has cold shut down, meaning temperatures and pressures in the core have returned to normal

A Tale Of Two Dogs Is Testament To Japan's Humanity

A news crew from Fuji TV saw a couple of dogs this week, lying in the wreckage of Mito, Japan.

These two dogs were saved! and taken in at a near-by shelter and a vet.

An animal rescue group says, "helping the pets in Japan is to help people. All of us who are animal lovers can relate to what it would feel like to be reunited with a pet after a disaster."
