Self Defence Force Officer Dies During 3-week Rescue Mission

A Ground Self Defence Force Officer died yesterday after a 3-week intensive rescue mission.

The source says that the officer is in his 50's, and had been involved in a rescue & rubbles removal operation since March 12, the day after the tsunami hit Iwate Prefecture.  The alleged officer was transferred to the hospital and died during his 2-day leave which was granted for the first time since the disaster.

Deep Condolences to the officer and his family.

Prime Minister Kan ordered a dispatch of more than 100,000 troops to combat the disaster, the largest scale ever in the modern history. All Self Defence Force troops have been working extensively to their physical and mental limits for the past 3 weeks.

SDF troops have conducted a wide range of missions to combat this large-scale disaster.   They range from search and rescue, rubbles removal, digging graves for burial, providing medical service, playing with children, cooking and preparing bath for the victims, road and bridge recovery, to tackling with tsunami-crippled nuclear plant exposed by radiation.
