A dog was found on the roof of a house floating at 1.8km off the coast of Kesennuma, and was rescued, in the Miyagi prefecture yesterday during an all-out 3-day intensive joint rescue mission by Japan and the US.
The dog survived three weeks at sea after apparently being washed away in the tsunami.
Initially, the dog was scared of the helicopter, therefore JCG crew were forced to descend onto the roof to try to lure the dog to safety.
Japan Coast Guard also tried to find residents inside the house, but it was difficult as the rooms underneath the roof were completely submerged in the sea.
The dog is wearing a black collar, and is now staying with the one of the JCG officer's family until the owner is found.
See more by video footage: I'm shocked to see an enormous amount of rubbles now floating on the sea....
