Tokyo Electric to Ask 2 Entities to Analyze Radioactive Water

Tokyo, April 8 (Jiji Press)--Tokyo Electric Power Co. <9501> will ask the Japan Atomic Energy Agency and Japan Nuclear Fuel Ltd. to analyze on its behalf radioactive water at its crippled nuclear plant in Fukushima Prefecture, northeastern Japan, officials of the power supplier said Friday.

To be analyzed by the two entities is radiation-contaminated water in the basements of the turbine buildings for the No. 1 to 4 reactors of the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, which was damaged by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, according to the officials.

Tokyo Electric Power has yet to decide when to consign the work to the Japan Atomic Energy Agency and Japan Nuclear Fuel, the officials said. The work will be aimed at helping the company dispose of the tainted water safely.

For the analysis, the water will be transported to such facilities as Japan Nuclear Fuel's spent nuclear fuel reprocessing plant in the village of Rokkasho, Aomori Prefecture, northern Japan.
It will be the first time for Tokyo Electric Power to ask outside parties to analyze radioactive substances except plutonium in the ongoing nuclear crisis involving the Fukushima power plant, according to the officials.
